While cyclists in Portland can treat stop signs as yield signs, they still have to yield the right of way.
Presumed Oregonian and Redditor /u/Lemion27 shared frustrating dashcam footage from earlier last weekend (June 1, 2024) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing the hare brained moment a cyclist blew by a stop sign and carved his way around a car instead of yielding the right of way.

The incident happened going downhill in a residential where SW Broadway Dr. and SW Hoffman Ave meet (exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As OP’s footage shows, he rolls towards the stop sign, stops, and rolls forward.
At that exact moment, a recreational cyclist in a yellow jersey following close behind OP rolls past the stop sign, around OP, and cuts him off on his way down the hill towards SW Broadway.
In Oregon, cyclists aren’t required to come to a complete stop at a stop sign, but they are required to yield the right of way.
The car in front of this cyclist, OP, obviously had the right of way here.
And, if observed by a cop, this cyclist might’ve been cited for a Class D Traffic Violation, subject to a $115 base fine.
Had the cyclist slowed properly and took his turn like he should’ve, he could’ve easily just followed OP down the hill.
Instead, this dangerous maneuver almost set himself up for a head-on collision with the car coming up in the opposite lane.
“As a cyclist, this s***, pi**es me off. It’s hard enough to ride and “share” the road when knuckleheads pull this crap and pi** drivers off at the rest of us,” /u/traveleng commented.
“As a cyclist commuter, other cyclists like this really pi** me off. He’s not going that fast, it’s not a huge effort to get going again from a stop, he’s just impatient and too superior to give a s***,” /u/modelbuilder365 adds.

It’s already bad enough, this cyclist is further perpetuating the stereotype that cyclists don’t care about the rules of the road.
But to increase your chances of getting into an accident, that’s just not using your head.
Oh, really I cyclist not obeying the rules finally gets caught! Cyclists not obeying the rules are the biggest pain in the rear that anyone can encounter on any given day. It is a shame that bicyclists are not required to follow the rule of the road anymore. In my day, we certainly did! I cannot tell you how many times I have seen a bicyclist below through a stop sign so that they do not have to slow down and how many times they have narrowly missed meeting their creator. Something should be done!!
