“Good ol’ Liberty Tunnel.”

In a classic example of rushing and driving recklessly not paying off, presumed Pittsburgher and Redditor /u/FakeTym posted up an arguably amusing bit of dashcam footage from earlier this July (July 16, 2024) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing an impatient driver in a red Mazda swing wide into a non-existent lane before the Liberty Tunnel only to drive onto the center median and save zero time in the process.

Check out the dashcam video below.

The incident happened at the intersection of Saw Mill Run Blvd on S.R. 51 and W Liberty Ave in Pittsburgh (The exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As the dashcam footage shows, we can already see our “hero,” a driver in a Red Mazda 6, halfway into both a left and right-turning lane, setting themselves up to cut drivers turning in the left-most left turn lane.

When their light turns green, the driver in the Mazda swings wide but doesn’t anticipate coming against a raised center median.

With nowhere to go and momentum propelling them forward, the Mazda driver forces themselves to drive onto the center median, half their car raised as a result.

He definitely played Tony Hawk Pro Skater.

They “successfully” pass two cars in the leftmost, left turn lane, but at what cost?

There’s traffic in the Liberty Tunnel, and the Mazda driver rejoins traffic and is immediately stuck, again.

Time saved?

None.

“Skipped two cars just to land themselves into the same unavoidable traffic? That’s a win, I guess? Here to karma and hoping they scrapped their bumper or underside going over those curbs,” /u/PhungTsui commented.

“I was waiting for them to either hit the car they were attempting to cut off or bounce off the tunnel wall. I even left enough room as I wasn’t going to get involved but that’s not good enough hahaha,” /u/FakeTym replied.

Cutting off cars like this recklessly may seem like a way to save time, at the time. But, in reality, it often does not yield any time savings. More so, it guarantees you create serious risks for yourself.

Had that center median not been sloped, that driver would’ve damaged their car, or worse, sent them careening towards traffic, causing an accident.

Hopefully, this harebrained move humbled them, but I highly doubt that.
