This is a common tactic used by cars and motorcycles to avoid a traffic light, but a driver in a school bus is another thing entirely.
SoCal resident and Redditor /u/FuzzyWuzzyWasHere shared dashcam footage from earlier this week (Sept 10, 2024) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing the idiotic moment a school bus driver turned right, and then immediately pulled an illegal u-turn to dodge a traffic light.
Check out their maneuver below.

The incident occurred at the intersection of 20th St West and Avenue K-4 in Lancaster, CA (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As his dashcam footage shows, they both approach the aforementioned intersection.
The school bus driver is seen making a right turn and then, immediately after, makes an illegal u-turn against double solid yellow lines before turning right, again.
Here’s where she made the u-turn. There are two double solid yellow lines visible.

It’s not clear if there were any students on board.
It’s worth noting the time on the dashcam reads 12:59 P.M.
/u/FuzzyWuzzyWasHere eventually submitted this dashcam footage to the appropriate school bus administration for review and disciplinary action.
“The footage has been submitted to the student transit authority,” OP confirmed in the comments.
“I received a phone call back from the school bus administration and they were just as shocked as everyone here (in the Reddit comments.) I was told it would be handled and that (obviously) the behavior is unacceptable for a bus driver.”
“Well, this is one driver who deserves to lose their job. No one would want their kids on a bus with someone who pulls things like this,” /u/WiteKngt commented.
“They will be suspended at minimum. School bus drivers are set to a specific standard and training and will be fired if they get a serious complaint. Unfortunately, pay has been an issue with bus drivers and keeping them employed. So they probably are lowering these standards,” /u/discgman added.
In California, drivers caught making an illegal U-turn are subject to a fine of up to $234 before court costs and one point on their record.
I think this school bus driver should be fired. Our kids deserve professional driving behavior at all times. A lesser punishment is arguably tolerating egregious driving behavior that may prove disastrous in the future.
