Smartphone footage from a Union City resident shows the aftermath of a string of overnight car break-ins.
Union City resident and Redditor /u/ZMonwy1213 shared unfortunate smartphone footage to the /r/EastBay subreddit from earlier this week showing the aftermath of a string of car break-ins that hit this quiet and peaceful part of Union City.
Check out his smartphone footage below.

The incident happened in the neighborhood bordered by Alvardo-Niles Rd. and Union Square. (General location on Google Maps linked here.)
As /u/ZMonwy1213’s footage shows, multiple cars and their front or passenger side windows were destroyed in an attempt to what looks like steal valuables and to, at least in this Redditor’s case, find a garage door opener to gain access to nearby houses.
“Over 9 cars got broken into on Sept 10,” /u/ZMonwy1213 explains.
“Thieves broke into my car, took the garage door open and broke into my house in the middle of night while I was sleeping up stairs. Fremont PD also reported same crime on the same night hours later.“
It sounds like OP was unharmed in the incident.
According to a July 2024 KTVU article corroborating OP’s claim about Fremont, burglaries in Moraga and throughout the East Bay are stealing garage door openers from unlocked cars and are using them to gain access to homes.
“Criminals are now taking those remote control garage door openers, opening the garage door, and then they’re accessing the garage also to see what else is in there that they can steal,” King (Moraga Chief of Police) said.
While police are investigating this string of break-ins, best practices to protect you, your loved ones, and your valuables seems to be to equip your house with motion sensors, security lights, and cameras.
In addition, reinforcing the door inside your garage door to access your house and adding a security door in front of it sounds like a good idea.
Exercising your Second Amendment rights and training yourself accordingly should be considered, too.
