A driver in a GMC Sierra’s shortcut across a gore point caused a dump truck driver to go off-road into a dirt median to avoid disaster.

Arizonian and Redditor /u/th3PRICEisRite shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier last week (Nov 21, 2024) from Prescott Valley, AZ showing a driver in a GMC Sierra busting a U-turn across a gore point directly into the path of a dump truck careening towards them.

Their insane, last-second move caused the dump truck to take evasive measures, swerving out of the way into a triangular dirt median.

Check out the rear shot of his dashcam capturing the incident below.

The incident happened at the intersection of 89A with Fain Rd and N Robert Rd. (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As the dashcam footage shows, OP is on AZ-89A making a slight left to continue onto 89A.

The POV switches to a rear dashcam view showing a driver in a Red GMC Sierra turn left to continue onto AZ-89A only to slow and make a U-Turn across a gore point to head southbound.

Yes, it’s a violation of A.R.S. 28-644 (A)(2), disobeying traffic control devices, to drive across a gore point.

The driver in the Sierra is not paying attention, his u-turn putting him directly into the path of an oncoming dump truck.

The driver of the dump truck, in a vehicle not known for its maneuverability, does what he can to avoid an accident by driving into the dirt median in the middle of the intersection.

“That idiot, he just ran a dump truck off the road.”

OP doesn’t provide follow-up but by the looks of things, it looks like the dump truck just ran off-road, narrowly avoiding a collision, and nothing more.

A quick look on Google Maps shows the next spot to make a legal u-turn was 300 meters away (less than 1/4 mile.)

If he drove another 300 meters, less than a lap of a track, he could’ve made a legal u-turn.

Disobeying traffic control devices is subject to a fine and at least two point on your driving record.

“He’s lucky to be alive,” /u/bigbusta commented.

“I sure bet the dude in the pickup saw his life flash before him as he is very lucky to be alive,” /u/StevenG2757 added.

“And I bet the idiot just drove off, oblivious to the chaos they caused?,” /u/ChaosMusic wondered.

Driving over a gore point is one thing, but to bust a shortcut that nearly causes you to potentially get into one gnarly accident is just plain dumb.

You don’t have to take a physics course to know that even a small collision from a enormous dump truck can have disastrous results.

Rash, illegal shortcuts on the road often don’t end up saving you time and, in this case, potentially set you up for an accident.

  1. I have seen people making left turns from that ‘intersection’ all of the time, including Police vehicles. There is not a sign stating ‘no left turn’ so it is legal. Since it is an unmarked intersection, then a U=turn is legal as well. The driver of the pickup is at fault due to a reckless maneuver and should be cited for that and is lucky that no one was injured.
