A reckless Jersey City driver’s move saved them 30 seconds. They only had to nearly mow down a pedestrian and make an illegal left turn to do it.
Jersey City commuter and Redditor /u/Damn_Dude7 shared headshaking dashcam footage from Jersey City earlier at the end of November (Nov 30, 2024) showing a driver not willing to wait pop into the left turn-only lane to cut across a driver headed straight, only to nearly mow down a pedestrian in the process.
Check out their dashcam footage below. (Original Reddit thread linked here.)
The incident happened at the intersection of Newark Ave. and Baldwin Ave. (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As his dashcam footage shows, OP is stopped behind a driver in a gold Honda Accord and White Honda HR-V on Balwin Ave before the intersection with Newark Ave.
As the Google Maps shot linked here shows, they’re stopped at a go-straight or turn-left lane.
With no signal on, the Accord is headed straight.
The driver in the white HR-V is too impatient to wait and takes matters into his own hands by going into the left turn ONLY lane and illegally swinging around the Accord waiting for their light to turn green.
Oh, and the HR-V driver nearly hits a pedestrian jogging across the intersection.

In New Jersey, an improper lane change like this is subject to a $85 fine and three points on your record.
“No, you don’t understand that minute of waiting was eating away at his life. C’mo,n dude yolo /s,” /u/ythelongface_ sarcastically commented.
“Well, they could knock down some buildings and add a lane or two, then the moron might not need to wait 30 seconds. Sound fair? Yes, I’m joking!” /u/GuitarLute added.
“Jersey City drivers, man,” /u/RHeisinger replied.
What this HR-V driver did shows why it’s reckless.
If the jogger hadn’t been so spry, a less nimble pedestrian might not have been able to move out of the way.
And, as mentioned, the light was going to eventually turn green, anyway.
The potential risks of getting into an accident, causing an injury to a pedestrian, or worse, are never worth the minuscule time savings.
