Given the option to overtake on the right, this driver decided to endanger other traffic by going over a double solid yellow into opposing traffic.

Washington commuter and Redditor /u/Kshr_bkn shared head-shaking dashcam footage from US-101 from earlier last week to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a fed up driver, tired of following “slow traffic” drive into overtake on the right by driving over a set of solid yellow lines into oncoming traffic.

Check out his harebrained maneuver below with the original Reddit thread linked here.

The incident happened on a section of US-101 in Sequim, WA, right after a construction zone and as the highway opened up into one of the few passing zones (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

“(This happened on the) 101 eastbound just east of Sequim Bay. First passing lane opportunity after 30mph restricted construction zone. 55mph limit,” OP clarified.

As the rear dashcam video and OP’s clarification show, just prior, US-101 is a two-lane highway.

Not shown is the construction zone, which slowed traffic down to around 30 MPH.

Fed up with waiting and given the first opportunity to pass, a driver in a VW Jetta Wagon doesn’t overtake on the right, which they could legally do given enough passing room, but drives into opposing traffic, over a solid double yellow, to make their move.

Seeing the daytime running lights of the Jetta wagon approaching, drivers in opposing traffic swerve to the side of the road to avoid a head-on collision.

The Jetta wagon eventually completes their pass, but recklessly so.

“I know exactly where this is, and I know the VW’s pain of being stuck behind cars that won’t move over for the only short passing lane for miles in both directions. I’ve never been annoyed enough to do that, though,” /u/Googlefluff commented.

“Man, they’re committed to not passing on the right,” /u/appa-ate-momo pointed out.

“So, both were wrong. The VW more than the truck, but FFS slower traffic keep right,” /u/rodeler added.

That VW Jetta passed in what’s considered a no passing zone, not to mention going against traffic.

Both are infractions, and violators are subject to a fine of at least $250.
