The driver was found stopped at an intersection with his foot on the brake.
Los Angeles commuter and Redditor /u/IAmDenisLara shared headshaking dashcam video from earlier in May (May 19, 2025) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a driver, possibly DUI, caught stopped at an intersection before emergency services had to be called to get him out of his stupor.
Check out the dashcam video embedded below with the original Reddit thread also linked here.
[OC] tired driver at 2 AM
byu/iamdenislara inIdiotsInCars
The incident occurred along S Western Ave (CA-213) near the intersection with W Anaheim St. in the Lomita neighborhood of Los Angeles (exact location on Google Maps linked here).
As the dashcam footage shows, OP is driving along S Western Ave in the early hours of the morning when, as his caption shows, a driver in a dark colored Corolla was observed driving dangerously.
“This guy (the driver in the Corolla) almost crashed twice a light ago,”
OP follows the driver to the aforementioned intersection and observes the driver stop with his brake lights on.
It’s later revealed he had his foot on the brake.
OP calls 911, and instead of police, first responders from the local fire department are sent.
First responders chock off one of the wheels to prevent the driver from gunning it too quickly and attempt to wake the driver up.
Startled, the driver comes to and, instead of stopping, casually drives off, over the wheel chock, as OP and first responders just watch.
Not police, they can only watch and not give chase, and that’s where the footage ends.
OP confirmed that no, they never eventually detained him.
OP doesn’t give any follow-up likely because the driver was never pulled over and simply doesn’t have any further details.
“Idk if that’s just tired, definitely seems drunk or something else,” the top comment from /u/SageOfSixRamen reads.
“So frustrating. I hope no one else has to deal with them that night,” /u/apcoleen commented.
“When someone passes out in their vehicle in an active lane, it’s often a medical emergency, which the fire department is the most equipped to deal with. Not saying that’s the case here, but because of that, these kinds of situations are usually handled by fire.” /u/The_Real_MikeOxlong explained.
“It’s highly likely EMS was dispatched alongside fire, as they often are, in case it really is medical. If it were something like DUI, fire would’ve called law enforcement to assist,”
If that driver was pulled over and found to be DUI, in California, depending on whether this was his first offense or not, he would’ve likely been hit with at least a fine of up to $1,000 before all the fees, a license suspension, and mandatory DUI school.
Depending on the severity, jail time and getting an ignition interlock device installed might be imposed, too.
