This driver paused, looked around, then gunned it across the intersection, except they didn’t see a Shawnee Police Interceptor right behind them.

Johnson County driver and Redditor /u/NetSurf916 shared hilarious dashcam footage from earlier in April (Apr 8, 2026) to the /r/ConvenientCop subreddit showing this genius at this somewhat lightly trafficked intersection that, since no cars were coming, red lights are optional, that is, until he saw the reds and blues of Shawnee’s finest pulling him over.

Check out the dashcam footage of his hare-brained move below, with the original Reddit thread linked here.

The incident happened at the intersection of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Quivira Rd. (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As the dashcam shows, OP is headed westbound on Shawnee Mission Parkway through the aforementioned intersection.

It’s just past sunset and after the 5 P.M. rush, so there aren’t many cars jostling for position at this otherwise busy interseciton.

A driver next to OP in a silver Nissan Frontier is seen approaching the limit line, pausing, and then blatantly running the red light.

It didn’t go unnoticed; seconds later, the reds and blues of a Shawnee Police interceptor pulled him over.

“The pickup beat the red light by six seconds,” the top comment from /u/DaveOJ12 points out.

“Those 5 seconds were very important to the driver…,” /u/tricky4444 added.

“That little maneuver is gonna cost him a few bucks,” /u/Wizdad-1000 threw in.

How many bucks?

In Shawnee, running a red light is typically a moving violation with a base fine around $75–$150, but after court costs and fees, the total can land closer to $150–$250. It usually adds about 2 points to your driving record. Insurance premiums may also increase if the ticket is reported.
