An early-morning red-light runner nearly t-boned this dashcam owner near La Colima Elementary.
Whittier-area driver and Redditor /u/DGuapo shared headshaking dashcam footage from near La Colima Elementary from earlier in April (Apr 15, 2026) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing an early morning red light runner almost giving him what he called would’ve been a “terrible start to my day.”
Check out the near-miss below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
The incident happened at the intersectino of Reis/Miller Rd. and Colima Rd. (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As the dashcam shows, OP is on Reis, ready to turn left, headed northbound up Colima.
OP gets the green and, with no cars coming straight, has the right of way.
Suddenly, he’s forced to emergency brake, a driver in a Red Toyota Prius runs the red light.
Had he not been paying attention, he would’ve been t-boned, hard.
“How in the world do people run lights that late? Like just take their licenses!” one of the top comments from /u/Mundane_Pie_6841 reads.
“Think positive. You saved yourself from having a bad day by being aware of your surroundings,” /u/1HorseWithNoName suggested.
“Yeah hadn’t had my coffee yet. Didn’t need it after that,” OP replied.
“Idiots like this make me wish we had a way to crowdsource traffic infractions to the police and/or insurance,” /u/KajuNator added.
In Whittier, running a red light falls under California Vehicle Code 21453(a). It typically carries a base fine around $100, but with fees it usually totals about $480–$500. It also adds 1 point to your driving record, which can raise your insurance.
Parents of kids near La Colima Elementary, it would behoove you to keep your head on a swivel, especially in the early morning hours due to drivers like this Prius one.
