A driver in a Ford F-150 and another in a Honda Civic Type R were caught on dashcam using the emergency shoulder to pass.
Tacoma-area driver and Redditor /u/nerdgurl196305 shared headshaking dashcam footage from the 509 from earlier in July (July 22, 2026) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing two speeding road ragers, going at it with each other, leading them to use the breakdown lane to pass traffic.

The incident happened on SR-509 just before the Port of Tacoma Rd overpass (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As the dashcam shows, OP is headed west down the 509 towards the heart of Tacoma.
Suddenly, and seemingly without warning, two speeding road ragers, one in a white Ford F-150 (not even a Raptor, btw) and a blue Honda Civic Type R, pass OP nearing triple-digit speeds on the right, using the emergency shoulder.
Dust and debris can be seen kicked into the air as they drive past.
Thankfully, OP escapes unscathed.
The same can’t be said for the drivers with any confidence as they’re seen speeding off into the sunset, both locked into whatever road rage they started.
“I thought the clowns were the ones squatting in the passing lane. Nope!,” the top comment from /u/HotRodHomebody reads.
“I saw the truck rapidly approaching but didn’t see the second one. I think it was road rage,” OP responded and clarified.
“Average behavior for both types of vehicle,” /u/5K1895 added.
In Oregon, using the emergency lane/shoulder to pass is generally considered an improper passing violation under ORS 811.410 (unsafe passing on the left) or related passing restrictions, depending on the circumstances. The fine can be up to $265 for a Class B traffic violation, and it may carry 2 driver license suspension points if it is a conviction that qualifies for Oregon’s point system. Actual penalties can vary based on the exact citation issued.
