A driver in a white Toyota 4Runner thought it was a good idea to overtake over double solid yellow lines as he approached a blind curve.

San Diego County-area driver and Redditor /u/Significant_gne3092 shared head-shaking dashcam footage to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a driver in a Toyota 4Runner deciding to go against traffic, right before a blind curve, and coming within inches of getting into a head-on collision.

Here’s the close call below with the original Reddit thread linked here.

The incident happened about 15 miles east of Julian on CA-78 (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As the dashcam shows, OP is on a rather swoopy section of CA-78 generally headed east towards the Salton Sea and the Coachella Valley.

As he approaches a blind right turn, one with a suggested speed of 25 MPH, a driver in a white Toyota 4Runner can be seen overtaking him over double solid yellows.

A driver cresting the corner going the other way can be seen coming up to the white 4Runner, head-on, both coming within mere inches of crashing head-on.

Thankfully, both avoid a crash.

To OP, and as his thread is titled, it was the “Worst close call I’ve ever seen.”

Three people lost their lives 6 miles before on CA-78 back in April after a head-on crash.

“That could have ended badly for all of you. What an absolute idiot. I hope they learned something, but probably not,” the top comment from /u/CottageCheeseJello reads.

“They didn’t learn anything. You can tell by how fast they kept driving,” /u/Probridgedweller added.

“Passing on a double yellow around a curve AND it’s on a hill 😭 Jesus really took the wheel for this dude,” /u/friendguard commented.

In San Diego County, passing an oncoming vehicle before a blind curve violates California Vehicle Code § 21752. This infraction carries a total estimated fine of $238 once standard penalty assessments and county fees are added to the base fine. Additionally, the DMV will assess one point against your driving record, which remains for three years unless masked by attending traffic school.
