Spoon Sports teased a couple of products they’re developing for the 2018 Honda Civic Type R including one of their iconic valve/engine covers.

It’s no secret that Spoon Sports is producing some parts for the 10th gen Honda Civic including the Civic Type R. But when Spoon Sports dropped what their iconic yellow engine cover looks like in an Instagram post earlier today (Feb. 5, 2018) the JDM fanboys, me included, lost their collective minds. Everyone knows that the Civic Type R rocks a red engine cover, as is tradition for Type R’s of generation’s past. But when Spoon Sports drops their version of Honda’s take on an engine cover, it can only mean good things are coming from the 30-year-old Honda aftermarket specialist. Check out that special engine cover for yourself below.

In years past Honda shied away from using an engine cover in their four-cylinder engine opting to showcase the guts of the engine instead of trying to cover them up. But with these new turbo engines, there’s no getting around how messy it looks under the hood without an engine cover so these new ones on these K-series engines are a sight for sore eyes. Just look at a K20C1 without its cover by clicking here.

In all honesty, the engine cover isn’t anything to write home about. In all likelihood, Spoon Sports probably just paint stripped the Civic Type R’s engine cover and sprayed this one with their iconic yellow.

In the photo above we can also see Spoon Sports has graced this FK8 with a brake reservoir cover, a special billet oil cap, and a high-pressure spoon radiator cap.

Although Spoon Sports hasn’t announced it, a yellow valve cover or engine cover presumably means they have or are planning to drop some major improvements to the K20C1. In years past that meant balancing and blueprinting the whole engine for reliability, a special head gasket to deal with the increased compression, a beefed up oil pump stronger than Honda’s OE unit and of course that yellow valve cover. Although power is only slightly increased, what results is a smoother engine that’s more reliable in the long run.

How Spoon Sports will apply the same tuning philosophy to this very technical and advanced K20C1 which is probably already tuned for max efficiency and power has yet to be seen.

What I do know is whatever engine package they do come up with will be expensive, made in limited units, and won’t be for your average 10th gen Civic owner.

  1. […] Earlier last year almost to the date Spoon Sports got their hands on a new Civic Type R and started to develop parts for the 10th gen Civic including a yellow engine cover. But, what about the beautiful valve cover underneath? Now, according to Spoon Sports USA’s distributor Go Tuning Unlimited earlier today (Jan. 31, 2019) Spoon has yellow valve covers for both the 1.5T and 2.0T Honda Turbo engines. That’s right, if you have a 1.5T or 2.0T engine in your Civic, Accord, RDX, CR-V, etc. these yellow VCs are cross-compatible. […]
