Remember that Honda Civic Si with 10,000 miles from last week? It auctioned off for $22,750 and people are losing their minds over it.

Earlier last week Bring A Trailer posted up an ad for someone’s 2000 Honda Civic Si with just 10,000 miles. I predicted that it would auction off for more than  $20,000 and by golly, it did! According to Bring A Trailer, this little ol’ Civic sold for $22,750 when the final bid was placed. Jalopnik already dropped their coverage on this landmark sale and presumably other outlets will do the same, but so far the comments are as expected. People are losing their minds over such a final sale price.

So far, the comments in the actual Jalopnik article are quite tame as the average Jalopnik reader can understand and appreciate why a seemingly ordinary Civic could fetch such an exorbitant amount.

Then you head over to their Facebook post and the sparks really start to fly.

One troll commented that,

That’s a lot of money for a $500 car…

Another commenter dropped this gem,

What a moron and a waste of money. No Honda is worth over $12,000.

This commenter did same maths,

$9.72 per pound is expensive rice.

This commenter didn’t seem to get it, but that’s OK!

Could have had a new Civic Si

This seems par for the course for Facebook comments in general but while the majority of commenters understand that the cars millennials lusted after in their high school parking lots are now within their reach, once again, some commenters can’t get over the fact that this someone dropped new car money on a tin can Japanese import.

On paper, the tale of the tape is quite lackluster if not downright boring. 160 HP at 7600 RPM and 111 lb-ft at 7,000 RPM is not something to write home about. It’s actually quite embarrassing in 2018. Not to mention that you have to rev the piss out of it to really get any power out of this 1.6L, naturally aspirated engine. To add insult to injury, there’s even less power when you’re not in the powerband (aka if you’re not in VTEC.)

Put performance aside, and there’s more to the story than meets the eye. Honda’s in the late 90s are Golden Age Hondas. With simple, yet aesthetically pleasing design and straightforward and effective engineering, these cars represent a bygone era of simplicity and a driving experience where the driver reigned supreme.

Civic Si Auction
This Honda Civic Si will auction for more than $20,000

With the new Honda Civic Si now turbocharged and with on the fly adjustable suspension, some Honda fans still yearn for those Golden Age Hondas of yore. That’s why they’re willing to spend thousands of dollars over normal when a pristine one like this pops up.

Some will get it, some won’t, but that’s how cars work. People forget the sentimental value.

Like when a mob mafioso was evaluating Lisa Simpson’s violin for resale, “It won’t bring much cash, but its sentimental value’s through the roof!”
