The EPA finally released its official range for the 2019 Kona EV with a whopping 258 miles.

Hyundai got some good news today from the EPA as when they announced the initial specs for their 2019 Kona Electric back in June, they boldly claimed a 250-mile range, one-upping competitors like the Chevrolet Bolt and yet to be seen base Tesla Model 3. According to the EPA earlier yesterday (Aug. 22, 2018) the 2WD 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric gets an impressive 258 miles of range with an EPA Fuel Economy rating of 120 MPGe (132 city/ 108 highway.) Although this might not be as much range as some of the Teslas with bigger batteries, that doesn’t matter as the 2019 Hyundai Kona EV has one more very important trick up its sleeve.

With electric motors, gone are any worries about those outdated stereotypes of longterm engine durability that’s always been somewhat attached to Hyundais despite the attractive price points. Electric motors mean fewer moving parts which translates to reliability in the long run, as is the nature of EVs.

But, like all Hyundais, what’ll set the 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric apart from its competition will be its price and warranty, the proverbial knockout punch against the Chevrolet Bolt and even the Tesla Model 3.

Currently, the Bolt EV has a three year/36,000 mile limited warranty and a five year/ 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. The Tesla isn’t all that better with a four year/ 50,000 limited warranty and an eight year/ 120,000-mile powertrain warranty. I expect Hyundai to blow those warranties out of the water.

Finally, there’s the price. Bolts MSRP at around $36,000. I expect Hyundai to undercut that price considerably.  According to my good friends over at Reddit, the EV’s already on sale in Europe with prices ranging between $35,000-40,000 depending on how you option your Kona EV. I expect Hyundai of North America to drop a $34,999 price that, when coupled with the federal and state tax incentives, will make a very enticing overall price for your situation.

258 miles of range is a lot and, in my opinion, is around that sweet spot for range that assuages range anxiety. With DC Charging standard and with charging stations literally peppered throughout the country, there are very few places you won’t be able to go if you plan to stop and charge along the way.

The 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric hits dealerships in a couple months before the end of 2018. It’s going to be cheap, it’s going to have a good warranty, and if you’ve got a Samsung phone, you know the South Koreans are good with their batteries.
