Every year Motor Trend puts on their “World’s Greatest Drag Race” and this year didn’t disappoint.

It’s hard to believe that we’re on the tail end of what’s going to be a decade-long tradition by Motor Trend of bringing the fastest production cars out to an airfield for a drag race but here we are in 2018. As per Motor Trend in their latest World’s Greatest drag race, this year’s crop of high-performance cars came out swinging with a McLaren 720S taking top honors, but a dozen spots down in the lineup Motor Trend happened to bring along a FWD entrant just for the heck of it, a 2018 Honda Civic Type R. Although it got last place, the Civic Type R was in the running for most of the quarter-mile run and was in earshot of the RWD Kia Stinger GT. Check out the awesome race for yourself below. I’ve already fast-forwarded to the start of the race for you.

Here’s the tale of the tape for every car that line up.

  1. 720S – 10.1 @ 141.5    / 711 HP 568 lb-ft/ 2829 lbs/ $284K
  2. GT2 RS – 10.3 @ 139.3 / 690 HP 553 lb-ft/3241 lbs/ $292K
  3. Huracan – 10.4 @ 134.5 / 630 HP 442 lb-ft/3399 lbs/ $314K
  4. ZR1 – 10.8 @ 133.1      / 755 HP 715 lb-ft/ 3560 lbs/ $124K
  5. M5 – 11.1 @ 126.7       / 600 HP 553 lb-ft/ 4370 lbs/ $102K
  6. Vantage- 11.7 @ 120.2  /503 HP 505 lb-ft/ 3847 lbs/ $151K
  7. Stelvio – 11.8 @ 116.1  / 505 hp 443 lb-ft/ 4360 lbs/$80K
  8. TT RS – 12.0 @ 114.6    / 400 HP 354 lb-ft/ 3373 lbs/ $65K
  9. Challenger – 12.1 @ 115 / 485 HP 475 lb-ft/ 4232 lbs/ $39K
  10. Mustang PP2- 2.6 @ 113/ 460 HP 420 lb-ft/3700lbs/ $46K
  11. Stinger- 13.1 @ 106.9  / 365 HP 376 lb-ft/ 4023 lbs/ $32K
  12. Civic – 13.7 @ 105.9    / 306 HP 295 lb-ft/ 3117 lbs/ $35K

As you can see, price and power roughly correlates to the finishing order with the most expensive cars finishing first and the cheapest cars finishing towards the bottom.

Noteworthy is that Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifogio coming in seventh with a bargain price of just $80,000ish MSRP.

It would’ve been nice if Motor Trend threw in a Hellcat or Demon which can be disruptors with their sub $100K prices and their monstrous horsepower numbers. But, as this race shows, you need to be dialed in to win, something cars from Dodge struggle with if conditions aren’t perfect. When everything’s right, the Dodge Demon and its 808 HP can lay a 9.65 quarter mile. Then again, it’s one trick pony.

And how about that Honda Civic Type R, not really a drag race machine but one for the corners, perhaps given a perfect start and the right driver, the Honda could’ve nipped the Kia Stinger GT.
