Contra Costa public works is dropping $50,000 on a pilot program that aims to curb sideshows.

Sideshows are a growing problem and nuisance unique to the Bay Area and surrounding communities so any possible solution to curb sideshows altogether is welcome.According to Kron 4 on their report on what Contra Costa County is doing they dropped earlier today (Oct. 16,2018) public works officials are firing off their opening salvo in an attempt to stem the tide by installing 100 grapefruit sized speed bumps at one particular sideshow location.

The location they’ve chosen, which I’ve linked below, is located in a very quiet part of Martinez, Calif, away from everyday traffic. Because of this secluded area, it’s a popular spot for sideshow goers to drift and pull off some donuts. This updated shot from Google Maps from May 2018 already shows the street emblazoned with fresh rubber from recent sideshow activities.

As per the report, the idea is to install the small speed bumps along the yellow center line and on all other center lines in the intersection. If anyone tries to do a burnout, they’ll run over these small grapefruit-sized speed bumps repeatedly.

I kid you not, the next part of this program will include installing even bigger speed bumps, the size of bowling balls, in the exact same location.

Officials do admit that this plan is destined to fail.

ublic works officials do admit that this could just push the problem to another location, but they are just going to wait and see what happens and go from there.

This will more than likely only cause people who drive normally on this road another inconvenience. As predicted, the small grapefruit-sized speed bumps probably won’t work, but the bowling balls probably will do the trick.

I think it’s an important first step, the first of many that should, at the very least, discourage sideshows and get the word out that deterrents are in effect.

I’m curious to see what the other parts of this pilot program will be.

I’m all for upping fines to egregious amounts and impounding cars indefinitely, something that won’t cost the taxpayer, only the offender.
