A normal Amazon package delivery was going great until I had a ladder frame truck ala the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado ad shoved in my face.

I ordered a set of tires for my bike and looked forward to my delivery with anticipation the Amazon delivery like I normally do until I got the box. Right in front of my doorstep was said Amazon delivery but I’d been served an ad I didn’t really expect. On all sides of the box it looks like GM is advertising its newest truck, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado full of superlatives as per usual for anything updated and new from GM.

Check out what my box looked like below.

Perhaps for some people this is the norm, ordering from Amazon multiple times a month. But, for me, someone who only orders something online a handful of times a year, color me surprised.

It looks like Amazon has been advertising on boxes since 2015 so this isn’t an entirely new marketing strategy and perhaps I’ve missed a few Amazon ad boxes because my brain automatically filters out ads in unconventional places but here we are.

Perhaps, as the article mentions, it was the free shipping I chose that triggered this Ad box, which, I’m entirely OK with. I’d just like to be given a heads up if I’m inadvertently choosing to be advertised to.

I’d prefer if I could choose which ads appeal to me, a win-win situation, or perhaps ad boxes are already being chosen based on what I buy which in that case, nevermind.

From people who’ve read my blog probably know, I live in the Central Valley of California, devoid of big city advertising in my day to day life. I kind of like not being advertised to if I can help it. But it’s creeping in with such ads like this, ads at gas pumps, at urinals, and even on my fast food wrappers.

So OK, I’ve learned that the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado is the latest and greatest whatnot but this form of advertising leaves a sour aftertaste in my mind, something I’m sure that GM doesn’t want its target market to feel.

How do you feel about box advertising? Let me know in the comments section below.
