This UTV, faced with a flat more than a dozen miles away from home base, hatched a patch job plan that not only worked, it became the stuff of legends.

They say necessity is the mother of invention and if that’s the case UTV owner and driver Colton Green is the Benjamin Franklin of our generation when it comes to tire patch jobs. A photo of his UTV tire patch job featuring a cocktail of tire patch materials that would put McGyver to shame has since gone viral presumably shortly after Colton’s latest UTV adventure. Check out the post making the rounds below.

UTV’s or side by sides are two to six person four-wheel drive off-road vehicles that owners take well off the beaten path. With dedicated off-road suspension and suspension travel that puts a lot of OEM trucks and SUV’s to shame, if a UTV gets a mechanical failure of some sort, you darn better believe some serious off-roading was going on.

A flat tire on the trail usually isn’t a problem since most serious UTV drivers carry spare tires. Since I don’t have much in the way of back story, I’m going to assume they didn’t have a spare handy or the spare they had was FUBAR.

If you haven’t already read the caption, they really used a combination of one large stone, zip ties, rubber cement and dozens of tire plugs to make this patch job hold. Presumably, this must’ve been one gnarly gash several inches in diameter.

And if you haven’t made the jump to the Instagram post, it’s a must. There are gems for comments like “Who the fuck carry’s 65 plugs?” and “I’ve driven more than 14 miles on a flat front… woulda rather had 65 plugs and a rock with zip ties.”

Major props to you, Colton. The fact that it held so well, well after the fact is a testament to your ingenuity. I’m filling in the back of my noggin as “good stuff to know for hairy situations.”

What do all y’all think of this McGyver level patch job? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
