During the latest Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event in Kent, WA, this new Cobra Jet owner stuffed his Mustang into the trackside barriers

Hundreds of drag races took place over the three-day NHRA event at Pacific Raceways earlier last weekend but there’s one particular drag race that’s making the rounds on the internet, particularly some photos showing a pristine Cobra Jet Mustang veering into a trackside K-rail.

According to Drag Racer TV, who caught all the action live for streaming, this $130,000 Cobra Jet Mustang will spend several weeks in the body shop getting it’s exterior all straightened out after crashing quite severely into a K-rail.

Check out the video and some photos of the unfortunate event below. The video should start at 2:31:06, if not, please FF to that point.

You can check out a full album of photos here documenting the crash, frame by frame.

The violent veer to the left happened, as so many events in drag racing do, too fast for most to react. Halfway down the track the Cobra Jet, for some odd reason, chucks it to the left.

As per some with a bit more drag racing knowledge then me pointed out, no attempt to correct is visible from the photos. Perhaps a steering malfunction caused an unavoidable trajectory into the other lane towards the K-rail.

Thankfully, this car comes standard with an NHRA approved cage and the Mustang continues driving towards the end of the strip before he’s stopped by track officials to assess his wellbeing. I’m going to assume he’s OK since I haven’t heard otherwise.

According to Ford’s official press release, these cars are literally turn-key cars meant for one thing, going straight in a fast line. Out of the box Ford says anyone can run mid-8’s at 150 MPH.

Under the hood is a massive 5.2L Coyote V8 that’s supercharged up to an unofficial 1,000+ HP. With unique four-link rear suspension and a 9-inch solid rear axle, there’s massive power going through an uncomplicated yet proven powertrain and suspension setup.

With only 68 Cobra Jets commissioned in 2018, damage to one is always unfortunate.

A cursory look at whose driving and a bit of Googling reveals this Cobra Jet’s owned by famed Ford Drag racer Gary Coe. Ford did a piece on him earlier this year when he took delivery of the Cobra Jet above.

This is his second Cobra Jet, the other one a MY 2013 CJ.

Hopefully, Coe gets his ‘Stang sorted out sooner rather than later and he’s back on the drag strip battling it out with Camaro’s.
