The Hero Car driven by Steve McQueen crossed the auction block and now has a new owner.

Even if you’re a critic of the movie “Bullitt” there’s no denying that this Ford Mustang is literally one of the most famous movie cars of all time. It’s no wonder lots of attention was thrown this dirty Mustang’s way earlier today at the latest Kissimmee Mecum auction when the 1968 Ford Mustang GT Bullitt Hero car entered the auction block, kicking off a flurry of bids setting a record for the most expensive Mustang sold…ever.

Check out the listing linked here and here’s a video of the bidding that took place just hours ago.

Since this was no ordinary auction Mecum took their time, making sure every bidder who wanted to place a bid had enough time to do so.

Bidding was fast and furious in the beginning with the bidding starting at $500,000 and quickly rising to $2,500,000 in less than a minute. Once bidding rose over $3 million, bids, probably between a handful of serious bidders, trickled in.

The auctioneer finally slammed his hammer down at $3.4 million and, with a 10 percent fee, landed a final auction price of $3.74 million. I’m sure Mecum is happy with $340,000 in one sale.

While $3.4 million might sound like a lot, that final bid price was low, initial forecasts expected this legendary Mustang to bring in at least $4 million.

The Bullitt Mustang did however break the record for most expensive Mustang by over $1.2 million, a 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake auctioning off for $2.2 Million last year in January.

The absolute record for a car at auction is held by a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO at $48,405,000 back in 2018, just to give you some perspective on how much people pay for legendary pieces of rolling art.

Now that this Bullitt Mustang is under new ownership, who knows if this owner will take advantage of a low final bid and attempt to flip it again, this time with no reserve.

No one in their right mind would drive this rare pony car around.
