Charging with a gas generator is the equivalent of the walk of shame for electric cars.

Lots of people hate Tesla owners because they drive expensive cars and think they look down on us plebes with gas engines in our cars, which, to an extent is kind of true. So, when we see Teslas in embarrassing situations, boy do we get our phones out and start recording or snapping a photo.

Redditor Eurostylin caught the shameful moment this Tesla Model S owner on this Vancouver, Washington freeway ran out of juice and had to charge up his EV with *GASP* a portable gas generator! It was also up on imgur and I’ve seen a handful of Facebook posts with this photo and people are relishing in this Tesla owner’s quagmire.

Here’s where this Tesla Model S broke down on Google Maps.

Running out of gas or electricity in a regular car or EV is both embarrassing, but it’s much easier to rescue yourself in a gas car than an EV. If you’re near a gas station, you can just fill up a container with a gallon or two and fill up your car and you’re on your merry way.

Not so easy in an EV.

There’s a good reason Teslas will warn you multiple times before you run down to empty, there are way less Tesla Superchargers around than normal gas stations and, if you can’t source a portable generator to charge you up a bit, you will have to call a tow truck.

And even if you find a powerful enough generator to use, drawing power at 12 amps, you only get three miles of range per hour. That means if you’re 12 miles from home, you might have to sit and wait somewhere for four hours while your car charges.

Not to mention waiting in the middle of the road has its own hazards.

Then there’s the whole issue of using gas. When Tesla owners took ownership of their cars, without knowledge of their charging infrastructure’s energy mix, they kissed gas goodbye. Some owners even rub it in people’s faces with their smug license plates like LOLOIL or CO2NOMO. Ironically, they have to use gas generators to get themselves out of a pinch.

Electric cars charging on gasoline generators, it’ll never not be hilarious to point out.
