The Nissan Sentra is probably an OK car but Youtubers don’t like who’s in the ad.
Compact cars are more or less mostly the same, around the same price point with similar features and packing some kind of four-cylinder. One of the main ways car companies differentiate themselves to first-time buyers is through advertising, with those car companies taking calculated risks that pan out rewarded with a couple thousand more sales.
Nissan took a risk casting Brie Larson in their latest commercial for their all-new redesigned 2020 Nissan Sentra and if the larger Youtube community has anything to say about it, more than eight out of 10 YouTubers dislike the new ad, and by extension, have a bad taste left in their mouth about the car.
Since the ad’s been uploaded to Youtube on Mar. 6,2020 Youtubers have viewed it over 320,000 times with close to 37,000 leaving likes or dislike votes. Currently, there are 32,000 dislikes or roughly 86 percent of voters who don’t like the ad.
The comments got so bad that Nissan turned off comments altogether. That’s textbook damage control.
The ad itself is pretty slick and, personally not knowing much about the beef Youtube and the greater internet has for Brie Larson, is well put together. With the theme, “refuse to compromise” an exciting ride with Brie in the new Sentra convinces a woman who had her promotion request rejected to not accept a compromise and demand she get that job promotion, no ifs, and, or buts.
Put literally any other person behind the driver’s wheel like a Natalie Portman, Danai Guirira, or Mila Kunis and Youtube would’ve probably loved the ad for what it is. But Nissan rolled the dice and chose Brie Larson.
If you are out of the loop like me, I’ve found a succinct explanation why Brie is not a good choice for Nissan’s ad at the moment.
CardThe 2020 Nissan Sentra is an important car for Nissan, it’s their third best-selling vehicle behind the Altima and Rogue. According to a handful of reviews that already came out, it’s a solid 3.5 out of 5. With a decent 149 HP engine, better dynamics, new safety features standard, and affordable, it’s a good product that should sell better than its predecessor.
People will probably like the new Sentra, but woke car shoppers will dislike this specific Nissan ad.
i didn’t read the comments from Youtube but i don’t think the issue people had with the add has much to do with Brie Larson considering i had no idea who she was and the second i watched the add i was horrified. maybe you drive like a reckless maniac so you see nothing wrong with crazy weaving between lanes, nearly clipping pedestrians on the curb, and just generally not compromising about the fact that you come first and screw other people, their lives are worthless.
***i am apparently commenting on an edited version of the commercial without the setup scene with the women not getting a promotion. it’s crazy they took one terrible commercial and made it even worse by trying to whitewash it by removing what they thought was the controversial part.
anyway, don’t drive like a jerk. have a good day
