This guy’s either a grade A idio* or a hero, depending on who you ask.

Auckland, NZ resident Eric Steiner victoriously shared photos of a shot, vandalized, and knocked over static safe speed camera on an infamous stretch of road known responsible for half a dozen of deaths and over a hundred crashes over the years because of speeding. While most of the comments celebrated “sticking it to the man” there were a handful of comments criticizing this hooliganism.

Check out the photos of the fallen speed camera below.

Consistent with a lot of vandalized speed cameras, this one’s been throughly destroyed. Someone’s taken a high-powered 22-caliber rifle to the main body, putting holes through the most important bits of the camera. Putting an exclamation point that this was done on purpose, the miscreants took a portable grinder to the perimeter of the pole, making it easier to push over and ensuring, that even if the camera was still working, it would be taking photos of grass.

Funny thing is this speed camera wasn’t something the police just put up all willy-nilly, it was in response to local input from the surrounding community about what to do with the increasing traffic traveling at high speeds on main roads.

Along with a handful of improvements like lowering the speed limit from 62 MPH to 50 MPH, this speed camera was put in. You can see it standing tall in this recent Google Maps photo.

According to NZ Police, the fines for speeding depend on how fast you broke the limit with an increasing fine for faster speeds. For example, going just an extra 9 MPH over gets you a $120 on top of a handful of fees.

Everyone hates getting fined and, if you’re a repeat offender, it’s understandable that you’d get angry. However, this fine is 100 percent avoidable if you know where not to speed so that hurt to your wallet is all on you.

In all likelihood local police will erect another speed camera in its place and this will have been all for naught. Guess where they get funding for new cameras? Your taxes.

No one likes speed cameras but they’re there for a reason.
