“I can’t believe you didn’t sustain more injuries with you vs. a semi,” the State Trooper said.

An Illinois resident and 2020 Acura MDX owner took to Facebook earlier this weekend, sharing photos of the aftermath of her crash after her MDX was hit from behind by a semi. She along with dozens of other commuters, was involved in a massive 50+ vehicle pileup on Interstate 55 near Towanda, IL as a result of a winter storm system passing through the area.

“If anyone is wondering about the safety of an ACURA MDX, here is an example of the safety,” She told other Acura MDX Owners .

“I was on I-55 going southbound in IL during a snowstorm. Traffic was stopped, and a semi hit me from behind. The semi was going way too fast for weather conditions.”

According to Heart of Illinois ABC’s coverage her crash was a part of several storm-related crashes on I-55.

Fox Weather’s post highlights two other massive blizzard-related pileups that also happened in other parts of Illinois that day.

My car is in the video (embedded below) that was jammed underneath the semi.”

Here’s a screenshot of her MDX pinned beneath the semi.

“I have a lumbar compression fracture and a goose egg bump on my head, but other than that, I’m supposed to get out of the hospital today. All airbags deployed and everything worked like it was supposed to.”

The crash photos are hard to look at, the MDX absolutely mangled from all angles. As crumpled as it looks, what we see is the aftermath of the MDX doing what it was engineered to do, that is to absorb and dissipate energy, keeping its occupants as safe as possible.

Look past the crushed engine compartment and smashed in rear end, and you can make out a driver and passenger compartment that’s mostly intact.

How well the MDX performed in a crash is no surprise considering the 2020 Acura MDX received a 5 stars out of a possible 5 for overall safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and a “Good” rating for crashworthiness from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

“The Illinois State Trooper said I can’t believe you didn’t sustain more injuries with you vs. a semi,” she concluded concluded.

“I’m feeling overwhelmed, but extremely grateful.”

I’m glad this MDX owner is OK and, although her MDX is no more, I have no doubt she’ll have no hesitation choosing another Acura as her replacement vehicle.
