This NC resident shows you how to correctly handle tailgaters. Do not engage and let karma do the rest.

Presumed North Carolina resident and Redditor /u/Hallba78 shared dashcam footage from earlier yesterday (Dec 11, 2023) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing the facepalm moment a tailgater, who had been riding his tail seconds before, doesn’t then pay attention and slams into the car in front of them.

Check out /u/Hallba78’s dashcam video below.

[OC] I’d just changed lanes because this guy was on my bumper…
byu/hallba78 inIdiotsInCars

The incident happened on Highway 52 in Winston-Salem, NC just before the E 5th St. overpass (exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

In the video, we see OP change lanes seconds after it starts, seemingly doing everything right.

“Man, OP making all the right moves. Changes lanes when he notices dude riding his ass, makes sure to allow merging traffic in immediately after, then uploads a sweet video with the perfect combination of short length and apt description,” /u/d0uble0h comments.

Apparently, the guy behind him was on his bumper for no apparent reason other than being a habitual tailgater.

In a not-so-surprising twist, we see the offending driver slam straight into the car in front of them, causing a small chain reaction with the car he crashed into crashing into the car in front of them.

“Yes they did, not a good evening for 3 drivers!” OP replies to a comment.

Technically having nothing to do with that driver’s hare brained move, OP continues on as he should.

“‘I couldn’t tell if he was on the phone or not, but suspect so. Bad combo with tailgating,” OP replied to a commenter asking if the distraction was phone related.

“It’s almost as if the DMV should make us all learn safe stopping distances when we get our license. Oh wait, now I remember; we did!” /u/uncle_saucebags commented.

I cannot tell you how satisfying this was to watch. It’s unfortunate that others had to be the collateral damage in the downfall of the tailgater.”

As mentioned by others, this is a great example of what to do with tailgaters, to avoid conflict altogether and let them seethe in their own stew of road rage.

It’s almost never a good idea to engage.

And, if you need another data point to get a dashcam for yourself, here it is.

It looks like OP has the extremely affordable (less than $120) Rove R2-4K.
