Dumb American Urban planning, just a bad bus stop, reckless drivers, or a combination of all three?

Presumed New York resident and Redditor /u/Only-Knowledge1548 shared dashcam footage to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing the shocking moment what looks like 8 cars drive by a stopped school bus with its four-way flashers on and flashing stop sign extended.

The incident happened on the 100 block of NY State Route 119 across from the local White Plains YMCA (exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

NY SR 119 is a five lane road.

As OP’s video shows, they stop in front of the YMCA as a school bus stops to let off some kids.

The bus’s four way flashers are on and stop sign extended, too.

While some states with roads with that many lanes (like WA) might allow drivers to sneak past a School Bus stopped like that, NY is not one of them.

According to the NY DMV,

“When a stopped school bus flashes its red light(s), traffic that approaches from either direction, even in front of the school and in school parking lots, must stop before it reaches the bus. You should stop at least 20 feet (6 m) away from the bus.”

I counted 8 cars drive by the school bus.

While against the law, many Redditors also pointed out that this is not the most ideal spot to drop off kids.

“I bet there’s a large vehicle that’s blocking the view for all of these drivers until they’re too far forward to stop. Which makes this an absolutely idiotic place for a bus to stop if they expect cars to stop for them in other lanes,” /u/SirP00pingP00per commented.

“That is an insane place for a school bus stop. There are five lanes. Those kids are probably closer to their school than they are to the other side of the same road. Some day, our descendants will laugh at the way we build roads. I don’t even see a crosswalk. How are kids from the other side supposed to get here,” /u/JFinkPottery replied.

Regardless of what someone commented as “dumb American Urban planning,” what those other drivers did is technically subject to a fine.

In NY, it’s $275 for first time offenders.

If you live in this area, or any area with a school drop off next to multiple lanes, it would behoove you to pay extra attention when a school bus stops.
