Why you should change lane and let other cars pass if you’re in the fast lane.

Presumed New Jerseyan and Redditor /u/heyhabzz posted up dashcam footage from earlier this week (June 11, 2024) from I-80 in Wharton to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing the instant karma moment a left lane camper got lit up and pulled over by NJ State Police.

Check out his dashcam footage below.

The incident happened on I-80 just before the 35Z exit onto Dover (exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As his video shows, he’s driving in the leftmost lane of I-80 (aka the fast lane) at 11 PM.

A driver in what looks like a Chrysler Pacifica is in front of OP and actively brakes, slowing both of them down.

It looks an awful lot like they’re doing it on purpose.

Pacifica driver brake checking OP.

Unbeknownst to the Pacifica driver and coming into view is a NJ State Police officer in their cruiser observing it all play out.

And in a case of instant karma, the cop signals in front of OP and throws on their blues and tunes to pull over the left lane camper.

Yes, NJ has left lane laws that say the left lane is the passing lane.

According to a blog post from McHigh and Imbornone,

“Under New Jersey statutes, motorists are not permitted to drive in the left lane on highways unless they are passing another vehicle or driving in the right lane is impracticable. This law helps control the flow of traffic on busy New Jersey highways.

Violators of this left lane law are subject to a $100-$300 base fine.

“Hitting the brakes while driving in a straight line on the highway with nobody in front of you triggers me to no end. Just let go of the gas pedal ffs,” /u/530TooHot commented.

Congrats on spotting this in the wild!,” /u/substituted_pinions added.

“I feel like this was because the van couldn’t maintain a straight line and for going over,” /u/Beatiful-Cycle-8598 opined, offering another likely explanation why they were pulled over.

If you’re wondering if NJ state police care about the left lane law and if they’ll pull you over even when there’s not a lot of traffic, this is your answer.
