This motorist thought he’d one up his fellow driver, but got a big ol’ slice of karma instead.
Presumed Kentuckian and Redditor /u/Liciaryce posted up a knee slapper of a dashcam video to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit of an incident that happened earlier last month in West Liberty (May 18, 2024) showing a driver in a black VW using a turn lane to cut a handful of cars.
What that motorist didn’t count on was a cop in his cruiser watching the whole thing play out.
Check out the dashcam video below.
[OC] Guy uses turning lane to run red light

The incident happened at the intersection of US Route 460 and Kentucky Route 191 in West Liberty (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)\
As the video shows, OP is waiting to go straight across the intersection behind a handful of cars, one of them, unbeknownst to an approaching Volkswagen on the left, being a police officer in their cruiser.
A black VW comes into view in the turn lane to go left but, instead of stopping to turn, the driver cuts in front of everyone going straight in plain view of the police officer.
And, in a case of instant karma, the police officer lights the Volkswagen up to pull them over.
According to Busald Funk Zevely, improper use of a left lane and disregarding a traffic control device like this is a moving violation subject to a base fine of up to $100 before court costs and at least three points on your record.
“It always makes me happy when these videos end with police lights flashing,” /u/NotCubical replied.
“Oh, I wish I could have listened to the conversation between that cop and that driver,” /u/Marrsvolta added.
“I’ve seen a lot of people do that, but never one that was in eyesight of a cop. Those idiots probably figure their odds of not getting caught are probably 99 out of 100. Of course, I may be giving them too much credit in the “figure” department,” /u/Dansk72 commented.
This driver has probably pulled that type of move many times before, and almost never got caught.
I say almost because, as OP’s video shows, it only takes one time for a cop to catch you to end your streak.
And, even if this driver got away with it, if you zoom in they only cut one car, in other words, a negligible time savings if any.
These types of maneuvers, if not most, are almost always high risk, low reward.
If you’re in the habit of doing something similar or are on the fence of pulling this type of hare brained move, it ain’t worth it.
