After passing, this semi-driver observed the Infiniti swerving, barely able to keep going straight in their lane.
Semi truck driver and Redditor /u/HashnaFennec shared concerning dashcam footage from I-80 in Granger, WY from earlier in the month (July 5, 2024) showing a driver in an Infiniti FX crossover merging in front of a truck, squeezing way too close to the semi, as two lanes merged into one.
Check out their dashcam footage below.
[OC] Almost got run off the road by a 4th of July drunk – I80 Wyoming, westbound
byu/HashnaFennec inIdiotsInCars
As mentioned, the incident happened westbound Interstate 80 in Granger (exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As OP’s dashcam footage shows, road construction forced two lanes to merge into one.
As such, barrel cones have been placed incrementally on the blocked-off lane, giving drivers plenty of time to safely merge (or zipper merge) into the single lane.
OP observed this blue Infiniti crossover deciding to merge in front of OP’s semi with his lane becoming increasingly smaller, forcing the Infiniti dangerously close to the semi’s wheels (tandems.)
“The cones forced them to merge into the side of my truck and I evaded to prevent a collision. We had less than six inches between us.”
“After they passed, they were swerving violently in a wide lane and obviously drunk (It was) textbook drunk driving.”
Thankfully, no one was hurt in this particular incident.
They weigh 3,000 lbs, I weigh 80,000 lbs. They’re lucky I decided they weren’t worth the paperwork. … I called 911 and reported them as a drunk driver. I didn’t stop for another 3 hours and unfortunately, they never got pulled over.
First-time DUI offenders in Wyoming are subject to suspension of their license for three months, six months in jail, and a fine of up to $750.
Subsequent offenders are subject to a license suspension of up to three years, up to seven years of jail time (for 4th-time offenders), and a fine of up to $10,000.
In addition, repeat offenders often get an ignition interlock device installed.
“I drove this road from there to Portland this last weekend, lots of idiots on the road for sure and I can imagine it’s only worse on holiday weekend,” /u/proportionalhuman commented.
“That highway is a death trap even on a good day,” /u/EligostheAncient replied.
There’s no excuse for drunk driving.
This is why, more than ever, we need to be vigilant of other drivers and their actions at all times.
Despite harsh fines and awareness around drunk driving, they’re unfortunately still out there.
If you suspect someone of driving under the influence, call it in ASAP.
You might save a life.
