“Somehow I got flipped off over this…”
Presumed So-Cal resident and Redditor /u/Azamat_Bahgkatov shared head-shaking dashcam footage from earlier in July (July 7, 2024) from sunny Newport Beach, CA showing the harebrained moment a driver in a Toyota Tacoma was on his way to run a red light had /u/Azamat_Bahgkatov not stopped and honked in time.
Check out the close call below.
[oc] Somehow I got flipped off over this..
byu/Azamat_Bahgkatov inIdiotsInCars
The incident happened at the intersection of Bison Ave. and Bayswater in Newport Beach, CA (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As OP’s dashcam footage shows, he has the right of way and the green light to turn left onto Bayswater.
OP even stops and pauses to make sure all’s clear.
In the distance, we see a driver in a gray Toyota Tacoma approaching the intersection, but OP assumes, given the simple layout of the streets and the situation, that the Tacoma will stop, as they should.
OP assumed wrong as the Tacoma shows no signs of slowing and, if OP didn’t honk, would run the red light, T-boning OP.
OP slams on his brakes and honks, which is enough to get the Tacoma driver’s attention.
Although you can’t see it in the video, OP gets flipped off for calling out the Tacoma driver.
What?
“Imagine believing you’re never wrong. The defensiveness would be exhausting,” /u/rockstuffs comments.
“Classic deflection of blame. Even if he hit you, he’ll probably insist it was your fault. Dude ran a very obvious red light, clearly has no level of responsibility to accept his wrong actions when called out -_-,” /u/BubbleEyedBean added.
“It’s simple: green arrow the truck is in the wrong, NOT a green arrow then the driver with the camera is in the wrong,” /u/Nder_Wiggin replied.
You’d think your drive in relaxed and spacious Newport Beach would be accident-free, but even in the beach towns of California, you have to drive defensively at all times.
He did NOT have a “protected left turn” arrow. Dashcam driver had a round, “Yield to oncoming traffic” light. Dashcam driver was in the wrong.
You might need to zoom in or change resolution. It’s a green arrow, 100%.
