Those familiar with the dashcam footage say this driver’s either drunk or under the influence of drugs.

Louisianan and Redditor /u/Previous-Warning8480 shared head-shaking dashcam footage from his dad’s truck from earlier this August (Aug 1, 2024) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing an alleged DWI/DUI driver in the early hours of the morning turning left on red and crashing head-on into OP’s Dad’s truck.

Check out the dashcam footage below.

Dummy hit my dad the other day, this took place in southeastern Louisiana [OC]

The incident happened at the intersection of N. Flannery Rd. and South Choctaw Dr. in Baton Rouge, LA (exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As the dashcam footage shows, OP’s dad is stopped on N Flannery Rd talking to someone on his phone at around 6 A.M.

When his light turns green, he ends the conversation and heads across the intersection.

Suddenly, a driver kitty-corner to OP’s Dad makes a left turn against red and heads straight for OP’s dad’s lifted Toyota Tacoma.

OP’s Dad brakes and swerves, but it’s too little too late.

They both crash, head-on.

OP’s Dad calls 9-1-1.

“I posted this on another subreddit and someone commented that it looked like the driver’s phone was mounted on the center of his dash/windshield. He must have been staring straight at it, otherwise I have no possible explanation,” /u/Previous-Warning8480 comments.

“Your dad’s headlights were right in that guy’s face. How he could not have noticed a big f***in’ truck coming his way is baffling. Definitely, drugs or distracted driving or something,” /u/Gunnerblaster added.

“I heard that drunk drivers will lock onto the headlights of an oncoming car for some reason. Like they’re drawn to them,” /u/International_Bend68 concurred.

“What’s crazy about this is there is absolutely nothing your dad could have done to avoid this. Nothing,” /u/Saabister commiserated.

This anomaly of a crash serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by impaired or distracted driving.

It’s chilling to think incidents like this can occur so abruptly, with no warning and little chance for evasion.

Thankfully, OP’s dad could call for help immediately, but not all such encounters end without serious injury.

This shows how important it is to stay vigilant on the road, not to mention the ongoing need for robust measures to combat impaired and distracted driving.
