“Even on near-empty holiday streets, one idiot still finds a way to ruin someone’s day.”
Indiana resident and Redditor /u/PiecesofBits shared headshaking dashcam footage from Christmas Day from Indianapolis showing an alleged, distracted teen driver running a red light at this near empty intersection, T-boning a driver in a Jeep Liberty and causing their vehicle to flip a whole 360 degrees.
Check out their video embedded from Reddit below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
As mentioned, the accident happened at the intersection of N West St. and Michigan St. (Exact location on Google Maps linked here) at around 2 in the afternoon.
As OP’s dashcam footage shows, he’s driving along N West St when he comes up to the intersection with Michigan St.
A driver in a white Chevrolet Cruze (who we later learn is a teen) can be seen to OP’s left approaching the same intersection but, instead of stopping before the red light, the driver enters the intersection without braking.
The driver eventually brakes to avoid getting hit by an approaching Jeep Liberty to the left with the right of way but it’s too little too late.
The driver in the Cruze T-bones the Liberty causing the Liberty to tip onto its side and complete a whole 360-degree roll before landing on its tires.
“I e-mailed this video to the police and went on my way,” OP commented.
“I hope they get it to him and his insurance company. He (SUV driver) was stumbling and then rolling around complaining of his neck pain so… not good.”
“Hey, at least there’s a hospital to the left. I’m impressed the SUV landed right side up,” /u/couchpro34 commented.
A look on Google Maps reveals there is an Indiana University hospital less than a mile from the crash location.
“VAbsolutely infuriating! Rode thru a stale red and utterly ruined that guy’s Xmas. This driver should never drive again and have immediate revocation of license. They are an obvious danger on the road,” /u/Fun_Telephone_1165 added.
“100% on their phone,” /u/funked1 surmised.
If this was (likely) a case of distracted driving, this was completely avoidable.
In Indiana, distracted driving is a class C infraction with fines reaching up to $500 for repeat offenders along with four points on your record each time.
Fines and penalties are much more serious if distracted driving results in injuries or death turning what would’ve been an infraction into potential vehicular manslaughter charges.
