While the legality of the u-turn is left up to interpretation, this driver didn’t come to complete stops before making their right turns.
Clark County area driver and Redditor /u/Burned26 shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier this year (Jan 2, 2024) from Las Vegas showing a Tesla driver trying to outsmart a red light but ends up running two instead, and it’s all on dashcam.
Check out their hare-brained move below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
As mentioned, the incident happened in Las Vegas at the intersection of Mandalay Bay Rd. and Luxor Dr (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As the dashcam footage shows, OP approaches the intersection and comes to a stop.
Suddenly, he observes a driver in a Tesla Model Y approach the edge of the intersection and, without stopping, make a right turn.
The Tesla driver then immediately makes a U-turn, the legality left up to interpretation, before making yet another right turn at a red light without stopping.
All this was to avoid a red light that OP and other traffic stopped for.
Of course, what that driver would consider a 4D chess move is, in fact, just running two red lights in quick succession.
“The funny thing is since they didn’t come to a complete stop before turning right, they technically still ran the red,” /u/U_MAD_702 points out.
“It looks like side traffic has a green arrow too, so technically they have run 2 red lights and an illegal U-turn,” /u/VerismilitudeionusAI clarifies.
“I just don’t get why people are in such a f***ing rush all the time here,” /u/11th_Division_Grows pondered.
“Traffic “laws” here are just loose guidelines, more of a suggestion than anything else. Don’t worry yourself about it so much, and enjoy our Wild West spirit, Yeehaw!,” local /u/coffeeshamanfunktron adds.
Running a red light in Nevada is subject to a fine between $395 and $1000.
