A careless driver came to a complete stop on a busy part of US-75, nearly causing a multi-car collision.
Nebraska commuter and Redditor /u/2-Pan_Shapour shared infuriating dashcam footage from US-75 from earlier this January (Jan 18, 2025) showing a reckless driver with Iowa plates come to a complete stop on the interstate just so they didn’t miss their exit.
Their ineptitude causes vehicles following close behind, including OP, to panic stop to avoid triggering a multi-car collision.
Check out /u/2-Pan_Shapour’s dashcam video embedded below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
The incident happened on US-75 just before it branches off 480 N and 80 W and E (exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As OP’s dashcam footage shows, he’s driving in lane #2 of US-75 just before this busy interchange.
Notice how he’s keeping a safe following distance with the driver in a white Toyota 4Runner in front of him.
Suddenly, the driver in front of OP stops in response to a driver in a Buick Enclave in front of them stopping first.
The reason?
The Enclave driver didn’t want to miss their exit.
Drivers can be heard on either side of them, now, whizzing past.
“Luckily, the truck behind (me) was paying attention and stopped with plenty of space left.”
With room to exit across the gore point, the driver in the Enclave inches past everyone and makes their exit.
OP clarified that the driver in the Enclave had Iowa plates.
“Honestly, people that do this shouldn’t be allowed to drive,” /u/SeanBlader commented.
“In case anyone missed the reference, Idiots Out Wandering Around is what nearby states call people from I.O.W.A,” /u/OwnBunch4027 clarified.
OP titled his thread Idiots Out Wandering Around.
“Guarantee he was checking his GPS. “Just a sec, everyone! Just want to make sure this is my exit!” /u/Francesca_N_Furter added.
While this comes off as reckless, seeing how the driver put themselves in the position to be rear-ended, it feels an awful lot like they’re just dumb, doesn’t know any better, and had no malicious intent when putting other drivers in danger like that, in other words, careless.
Careless driving in Nebraska is a less serious offense, is not a misdemeanor, and carries a $100 fine.
If this is actually reckless, that obviously comes with harsher fines and penalties.
As mentioned, this demonstrates the importance of a safe following distance.
Had any of the involved parties following had not been keeping a safe distance, this could’ve ended up a whole lot worse.
