This dashcam owner says the distracted driver laid on her accelerator pedal, sending her 1000+ feet down the road.

Austin commuter and Redditor /u/ItsKashton shared heart-pumping dashcam footage from Austin, TX from earlier in February (Feb 26, 2025) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing an idiotic commuter pull a no-look merge from a turn lane back onto the Loop 360 only to get rear-ended by said dashcammer who, just moments before, was going 65 MPH.

Check out their dashcam footage below with the original Reddit thread linked here.

The incident happened at the intersection of TX-360 and the Mopac Expressway towards Frontage Rd (Exact location on Gooogle Maps linked here.)

As OP’s dashcam footage shows, he’s driving in the fast lane of TX-360 towards the intersection with the Mopac and Frontage Rd.

It’s noteworthy that the speed limit in this section of the 360 (and most of the loop) is 55 MPH.

Suddenly, a driver in a white crossover in a left turn headed towards the N Mopac Expressway decides they want to rejoin traffic on the loop but does so without looking properly.

With traffic next to them and (admittedly) traveling above the posted speed limit at around 65 MPH, OP observes this driver pull out in front of them.

OP slams on his brakes, but it’s not enough.

OP scrubs a good amount of speed but still rear-ends the other driver.

“It’s not possible to go from 65 MPH to a dead stop in 4 seconds,” OP replied to a comment asking about the braking performance of his car. “Maybe in a new car, but mine was 13 years old. If I had swerved into the right lane, I would’ve collided with the driver next to me.”

The driver panics and hits the accelerator, sending them 1000+ feet towards the concrete supports holding up the Frontage Rd overpass.

They eventually come to a stop, and from OP’s replies, it doesn’t look like anyone was seriously injured, nor was a ticket issued.

“Police arrived in >3 minutes, so I didn’t get a chance to speak to her. It didn’t help that she went ~1000 feet down the road. We both had the same insurance (Geico), and she was found at fault quickly with the video.”

“No ticket AFAIK. This was on a busy highway, so they (the police) were more concerned with getting cars off the road.”

“I am highly impressed by the complete absence of profanity,” /u/Drew707 commented.

“I swear I yelled out “God dammit!” as it happened, but apparently I was dead silent until I called 911,” OP replied.

OP mostly did everything correctly in this situation.

The consensus is that when a collision is unavoidable, swerving out of the way is only an option if traffic around you is 100 percent clear. Otherwise, braking hard is the way to go.

And I say mostly as, if OP was going the speed limit, the severity of the crash would’ve been reduced.

Also, thankfully he had a dashcam as, in a case of he said she said, OP would’ve shared some of the fault.
