According to the dashcam owner, this new driver went big when, after a slow crash, she followed that up with a crash into a fire hydrant.

If you had low water pressure on the 19th in the afternoon around Horse and Thom, this is why.

Las Vegas area driver and Redditor /u/TommyBoy110 shared interesting dashcam footage from earlier on that day (Dec 19, 2025) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a new teen driver, with a learner’s permit, first t-boning another driver with the right of way, then following that up by rolling into and wrecking a fire hydrant.

Check out the dashcam footage below with the original Reddit thread linked here.

As mentioned, the incident happened at the intersection of Horse Dr. and Thom Blvd (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

In the dashcam footage, OP rolls up to the aforementioned four-way stop.

A car on Thom Blvd with the right of way enters the intersection and is immediatly t-boned by a slow rolling driver in a Civic.

We later learn that the driver in the Civic is new, has a learner’s permit, and is with their Mom (who’s in the passenger seat)

If that wasn’t bad enough, instead of slamming on the brakes, likely flustered, the teen driver then rolls into and demolishes a fire hydrant, sending water shooting multiple stories into the air.

“I found out later that it was a teenager who just got her learner’s permit, and they were fine, just a little shook up. I talked to the adult in the car with and he just kept muttering out loud,” I told her to stop.”

Thankfully, it appears that no one was seriously injured; however, there was thousands in damage to both vehicles, not to mention the fire hydrant.

“I thought fire hydrants only did that in the movies. We’re in Texas, and all of the hydrant water Valves are located underground…the hydrant part is designed to break off at the surface, without leaking,” one of the top comments from /u/nak00010101 points out.

“There are two types of hydrants, dry barrel and wet barrel. I think we normally use a wet barrel for faster firefighting unless the area is subject to freezing weather,” /u/ChanceConfection3 replied.

“Looks like a free car wash to me,” /u/ZealousIdealBag1626 added, to which a video showing the dangers of driving under one was posted as a reply.

I repeat, do not drive under water from broken fire hydrants! You will break your windshield, or worse.

In Nevada, a learner’s permit holder who fails to yield and causes a collision can face fines of around $300+ and 4 demerit points on their driving record, which could lead to permit suspension if enough points accumulate (DMV Nevada). If the crash involves injury or significant damage, charges could escalate to reckless driving, carrying higher fines and 8 points (Shouse Law). Permit holders must also follow all learner restrictions, and insurance consequences can be severe even for first-time at-fault collisions.
