This Memphis-area driver was saved from hearsay; defensive driving could’ve saved him from this whole headache.
Memphis-area driver and Redditor /u/MonkWhoHonks is thanking their lucky stars they installed a dashcam after a video from earlier last year (Sept 9, 2025) shared to the /r/Dashcam subreddit shows another driver, as they both exited a Mapco, sideswiping them and, instead of accepting responsibility, lying, blaming OP instead.
Check out the dashcam footage that saved his behind below, with the original Reddit thread linked here.
The incident happened in the 1700 block of Kirby Parkway at this Mapco (exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As the dashcam shows, OP scoots into the rightmost side of this driveway, exiting a Mapco at the same time, a driver in a Toyota Camry tries to exit from the center.
Unfortunately, OP is now in that Camry’s blind spot.
The driver in the Camry exits and hits OP’s side before coming to a complete stop and exiting her vehicle.
Instead of doing the right thing and accepting responsibility, she feigns ignorance and denies she was in the wrong.
“(She) tried to claim that I hit her when she was making a turn. Luckily, the footage proved what happened, and the insurance process was super quick. ALWAYS have a dash cam!”
Commenters and locals were quick to point out that, despite having dashcam footage, he could’ve been a more defensive driver.
“You know what would save you even more than a dashcam? Being a more attentive/defensive driver. As soon as that video started and the other car inched forward, I thought “They’re going to turn right”. Definitely could have waited to see what they were doing a little longer before pulling up next to them on unmarked lanes,” /u/SkySix commented.
“If there are no lane markers, then there’s no middle lane. You just tried to undertake at an intersection on the shoulder, essentially,” /u/Debde5416 bluntly put it.
“Why would you post this video, thinking it makes you look like a good driver?” /u/Earwaxsculptor piled on.
While it’s good he had a camera rolling and the woman was clearly in the wrong for claiming she wasn’t entirely at fault, the bigger lesson is not to assume multiple lanes exist when lane markings are missing and to err on the side of caution whenever it’s unclear what the proper move is.
In Tennessee, if you turn into another car and cause a crash, you can be cited for failure to yield. Fines typically range from $50–$200, and you may receive 2 points on your license, which can affect insurance rates.
