This is the wrong place to break any rules of the road because the CHP office is right there, too.
Beaumont-area driver and Redditor /u/YummyPop_ shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier in April (Apr 5, 2026) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a driver in a Mercedes Sprinter failing to maintain their lane, turning left, and cutting off a CHP officer in the process.
Check out their bonehead mistake below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
The incident happened at the intersection of Sun Lakes Village Dr/E 2nd St. and S Highland Springs Ave, which happens to be right next to the local CHP office (exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As the overhead of this area in the dashcam shows, this particular intersection has 3 left turn lanes, with the rightmost lane having the option to go straight, too.

A driver in a black Mercedes Sprinter Van in the middle turn lane can be seen starting to turn left onto Highland.
Instead of maintaining their lane, they drift into the path of an officer in their California Highway Patrol vehicle, cutting them off.
The cop has to brake to avoid a collision.
Predictably, they light the Sprinter up before pulling them over.
“Best convenient cop ever,” the top comment from /u/defectconstraint reads.
“Situation awareness? 0
Use of mirrors? 0
Respecting turning lanes? 0
“Cutting off a police cruiser? Priceless,” /u/Cobalt32 humoursly added.
“Holy s***, did you see those gas prices? 6.09???,” /u/BioRod commented, pointing out the high gas prices as of late.
In California, cutting someone off by failing to maintain your lane is typically cited under unsafe lane change or failure to drive within a lane (CVC 22107 or 21658). The base fine is usually around $238–$250, and it adds 1 point to your driving record. If it causes a crash or is deemed aggressive, penalties can increase.
