“There’s clueless, and then there’s thinking your lane continues on the other side of the concrete median clueless.”
South Portland-area commuter and Redditor /u/TrickOrange shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier in April (Apr 8, 2026) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a clearly confused driving slotting into a turn lane and, instead of turning, going straight, into opposing traffic and towards OP, instead.
Check out the hare-brained move embedded below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
The incident happened in the 300 block of Maine Mall Road at the intersection with the main entrance (no pun intended) to the Maine Mall, across from Best Buy (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As the dashcam shows, OP is headed southbound on Maine Mall Rd when he slots into the left turn lane to enter the Best Buy Parking Lot.
In front of him, a driver in a black Hyundai heads into the opposite turn lane and, instead of turning, decides to go straight towards OP.
They almost collide, forcing OP to emergency brake to avoid a collision.
In follow-up footage shared a few hours later, OP shows that inevitably, the offending driver gave up expecting OP to back up and pulled a U-turn before booking it, instead.
“Did that with such confidence,” one of the top comments from /u/nonitoni reads.
“Extreme idiocy, hardcore edition!” /u/CoderJoe1 added.
“To be fair, there are some turn lanes that have a median between them and the rest of the continuing road. I feel like it is obvious that this isn’t one of them, though,” /u/TheCurseOfChris responded, in defense of what might’ve been thinking.
In South Portland, Maine (statewide rules) going straight from a turn‑only lane would be treated as a moving violation for not obeying lane control/markings, and the citation would typically come through the Maine Violations Bureau. Fines for such minor moving infractions often fall in roughly the ~$125–$175 range (some common violations in that tier) plus court costs, though the exact amount is set on your ticket. Maine also assigns demerit points for moving violations (often around 2 points for lane/turn‑related offenses), and if you accumulate 12 points within a year your license can be suspended.
