This dashcam owner was slowing, downhill, for quite some time to prepare for a turn. A driver following close behind seemed not to get the memo.

Cocke County-area driver and Redditor /u/JCMatthews66 shared surprising rear dashcam footage from earlier in April (Apr 16, 2026) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a driver, following at too fast a speed to not be paying attention, almost slamming into the back of OP as he slowed to prepare for their upcoming turn.

Check out the dashcam footage embedded below with the original Reddit thread linked here.

The incident happened on US-321/ TN-73 just before the intersection with Rooster Town Rd. (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As the dashcam shows, OP is driving eastbound down 321 towards the aforementioned intersection.

“It’s hard to tell but I was going down a steep hill to turn on my road,” OP clarified in the comments.

Aware that there might be traffic following him, OP did his best to give other drivers a fair warning.

“I always try to give fair warning that I’m turning…Speed limit is 50 MPH, but I was gearing down for a while to scrub off speed.”

OP begins to slow and does so even more, slowing to nearly 20 MPH before his turn.

A driver in what looks like a Chevrolet Tracker following OP seems to have zoned out as they can be seen and heard, realizing too late that they might slam into OP.

The driver in the Tracker does their best to emergency brake, but physics gets the best of the SUV’s abilities, locking up their tires.

Thankfully, OP turns before what would’ve been an inevitable rear collision.

“…I never saw him coming. He was hauling a**.”

“Realistically, it doesn’t matter if you had your signal on or not. If there was another vehicle in front of you slowing to turn, you wouldn’t have your signal on, and yet, that idiot could have still rammed you from behind, regardless,” one of the top comments from W7ENK reads.

Or, you could have been slowing down because someone was crossing the roadway? Maybe there was debris in your lane? Point being, the a**hat behind you should have been more aware of what was going on ahead of him,”

“Always analyze and anticipate…”

In Tennessee, speeding fines vary by how far over the limit you were, but typically start around $40–$150+ plus court costs, and increase with speed and location (school/work zones are higher).

Following too closely (TCA 55-8-124) is usually a Class C misdemeanor and can carry a fine of about $50–$200+ plus court fees. There are no automatic state license points system in Tennessee, but these violations can still go on your driving record and may raise insurance rates; reckless driving charges (if applied in a near-rear-end situation) can carry heavier penalties including higher fines and possible license consequences.
