This goofball tried to use the shoulder to pass after seeing a gap open up, but ended up wrecking his SUV and another driver’s truck.
Austin-area driver and Redditor /u/GervaisFace shared a dashcam clip of a massive idiot doing what they do best from earlier in September (Sept 9, 2026) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit, showing them taking a chance with a pass on the shoulder only to have passing room suddenly disappear, resulting in wrecked vehicles.

The incident happened on the MoPac Expressway right near the exit onto Windsor Rd. (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As the dashcam shows, OP is headed southbound on the MoPac and changes lanes into Lane #1, presumably to exit onto Windsor.
Suddenly, a driver in a beige Chevrolet Tahoe, despite there not being much of a shoulder to begin with, takes the opportunity to attempt to illegally pass on said shoulder.
They only took that chance as another driver in a Ford pickup in front of them attempts to change lanes, potentially clearing up space for the Tahoe driver to brute-force his way through.
It all goes south quickly as the Ford pickup driver aborts their lane change and attempts to stay in their original lane, but with the Tahoe driver, at that moment, attempting to squeeze past in the shoulder, the Ford driver is sandwiched in, a predicament not of his own making.
The Tahoe driver bounces into the freeway barrier and back into the side of the Ford truck, causing thousands in damage to both vehicles.
The Ford driver changes back into Lane #2, and the driver in the Tahoe follows, presumably, to catch up to the Ford to exchange information, although it very likely ended up being a hit-and-run.

In Austin, illegally passing on the shoulder violates Texas Transportation Code §545.058 and is generally a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $200. (Texas Statutes) Texas does not use a driver-points system, so there are no points assessed for the violation; causing a crash can potentially lead to additional charges depending on the circumstances.
