Thankfully, he had his dashcam running and is able to send evidence to both police and his insurance.
Presumed Los Angeleno and Redditor /u/FishBoneSKR posted up dashcam footage from earlier this week (June 3, 2024) from the 101 to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing the unfortunate moment a reckless driver in a Toyota Corolla sideswiped him from behind during a chaotic lane change.
To add insult to injury, the driver didn’t stop, completing his hit-and-run.
Check out the dashcam video below.
[OC] 8ZTE453 You Suck At Driving (Hit and Run)
byu/fishboneskr inIdiotsInCars
The incident happened in Woodland Hills in Los Angeles, CA on the Ventura Freeway (Highway 101) before the Winnetka Ave exit (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As OP’s video shows, he’s just driving down the 101 at the speed of traffic when a driver in a black 2012 Toyota Corolla (VIN 5YFBU4EE2CP037750 and License Plate 8ZTE453) hits OP from behind during the Corolla’s lane change.
OP had noticed this guy’s bad driving moments before.
“Just driving through Los Angeles when I noticed this driver speeding and “cutting up” from behind me and almost rear ending me.”
“But that wasn’t enough, he cuts off the car to my left, speeds up try to cut me now but his pea sized brain and lack of driving skills (and prob insurance) does not realize there were 3 car lengths of space in front of him (after he cut off the car to my left, slightly behind me) and hits me then runs.”
“The second that guy hit me, I knew he won’t stop.”
OP followed the Corolla for another 30 seconds, so his dash cam could get his plate number from all different angles.
It’s not clear if the police would do anything with this dashcam footage, even though the plates are clearly visible, but many other Redditors recommended OP, at least, file a police report, on top of an insurance claim, too.
“Now the waiting game begins. Send the video and detail to your insurance. If he has valid insurance, they should accept 100% based on video evidence and the fact the idiot failed to stop,” /u/Warcraft_fan commented.
“LOL…yet he used his turn signals every turn. The duality of man,” /u/Ho-Chi-Mane humorously pointed out.
“I guarantee you that they think they’re a great driver,” /u/Pithecanthropus88 commented.
In California, hit-and-runs that don’t result in injury or death are classified as misdemeanors, subject to either jail time up to six months, a base fine up to $1,000, or both.
