“This idiot is proving Virginia drivers are some of the worst in the US.”

Virginian and Redditor /u/OP123ER59 shared frustrating dashcam footage from earlier in July (July 23, 2024) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a driver in Newport News failing to yield during their left turn, almost resulting in a head-on collision.

Check out what this Virginian called proof that Virginians simply can’t drive, dashcam footage below.

[OC] This idiot is proving Virginia drivers are in fact, some of the worst drivers in the US. *excuse the language*

This incident happened at the intersection of Canon Blvd. and City Center Blvd in Newport News (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As the dashcam footage shows, OP is driving on City Center Blvd in the leftmost lane towards the intersection with Canon Blvd.

The footage clearly shows they have a green light and the right of way.

As they enter the intersection, a driver in a Red Ford Truck kitty-corner to them and preparing to turn left suddenly enters the intersection straight into their direction of travel.

OP swerves out of the way just in time, narrowly missing the Ford and avoiding a head-on collision.

“F***ing Idiot,” she yells to who she’s talking to at the time on her presumably hands-free device.

“I just almost got into a f***ing wreck because of some dumb a**. Holy S***!”

Virginia doesn’t look kindly on drivers failing to yield.

According to Humbrecht Law,

“Failure to Yield Right of Way in Virginia under Va. Code §46.2-863 is punished with up to 12 months in jail…The offense can also be punished with a fine up to $2500.”

In addition to possible fines and jail time, drivers can also be punished with up to four points on their record and a license suspension of up to six months.

“For a second I thought they must have been rear-ended because no way anyone is that da** stupid or blind…. but no, it appears they just are,” /u/TheW83 commented.

“I zoomed into the driver and their eyes were barely over the top of the steering wheel…,” /u/BisonLoose6266 pointed out.

“I was captivated by the wipers,” /u/Apprehensive_Diver46 humoursly added.

Intersections remain a hot spot for potential collisions.

As such, it would behoove drivers, especially in Newport News, to pay special attention around these areas.

Thankfully, nothing came of this close call.

Hopefully, that other Ford driver will be extra cautious and think twice before bolting out into traffic from here on out.
