This driver in Royal Ridge failed to yield to oncoming traffic on this busy stroad and got into a left-turn collision.
San Antonian and Redditor /u/EnfaxFuzzy shared shocking dashcam footage from earlier in July (July 25, 2024) from Royal Ridge in San Antonio to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a driver making a left turn across O’Connor Rd. fail to yield to oncoming traffic, causing him to get into a collision that damaged a street sign which subsequently fell onto a parked truck.
It’s a mess.
Check out the dashcam footage of it all playing out below.
[OC] Left turn across two lanes… accident waiting to happen
byu/EnfaxFuzzy inIdiotsInCars
The incident happened in the Royal Ridge neighborhood of San Antonio, TX at the intersection of O’Connor Rd. and Fox Run (exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As OP’s video shows, he and the traffic in front of him come to a stop before the uncontrolled intersection with Fox Rd.
Leaving a gap for cross traffic to pass through, a driver in a Dodge Durango begins to turn left onto Fox Rd but fails to creep across and yield properly to oncoming traffic on O’Connor Rd.
The driver in the Durango gets T-boned on their front passenger fender by another driver in a Nissan Altima, sending them onto the sidewalk next to Fox Rd, taking out the street sign in the process.
The street sign falls next to a Ram 1500 truck, more than likely damaging the truck’s paint.
OP doesn’t go into much detail and doesn’t mention anyone getting seriously hurt or injured.
In Texas, failing to yield the right of way resulting in an accident is subject to a fine between $1,000-$4,000.
“I never understood the thought process of turning when you can’t visually see if it’s clear or not,” /u/chuck-u-farley commented.
“IF that was the radio and not a song put in after, the timing of the lyrics was perfect!,” /u/Randall_Flagg5 pointed out.
“I will never get over how awful American stroad design is. It’s kind of unsurprising that this kind of accident happens when the road appears to be pretty much built to enable them,” /u/Paenusbreth added.
Navigating across intersections means the onus is on the turner to be able to see cars crossing their direction of travel.
It defies logic and sounds easier said than done but, if you can’t see cars approaching from an obscured lane, it’s in your best interest to slow and creep across the intersection until you can clearly see cars headed your way.
Failing to do so, especially on a busy stroad, is just inviting an accident.
