Parent pulls a wild driving maneuver because their kid was already 10 minutes late.

San Diego-area driver and Redditor /u/RandomDreamin shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier this week (Mar 3, 2026) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a reckless parent resorting to turning right from the leftmost lane because their kid was, at that point, 10 minutes late.

Check out the dashcam footage embedded below with the original Reddit thread linked here.

The incident happened at the intersection of Mesa Dr. and Ivey Ranch Rd, likely as they made their way to Martin Luther King Jr Middle School (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

Mesa Dr. and Ivey Ranch Rd.

As the dashcam shows, OP is headed westbound on Mesa towards the aforementioned intersection.

OP turns onto Ivey Ranch on green; however, a driver in a Red Honda Civic Hatchback (License plate 9TZZ980) from a straight-only lane also turns right, overtaking OP.

Their excuse? Their kid was late.

Refrencing MLK Middle School’s bell schedule, 1st period was 8:15. It was 8:25.

Was swinging wide into oncoming traffic from a lane you’re not supposed to turn from worth it?

Probably not.

Thankfully, nothing came of the incident .

“I learned early on that one minute or ten minutes late was still late. So no reason to rush and likely make something worse,” the top comment from /u/ADmirable-Sir9716 reads.

“Their tardiness is clearly your problem,” /u/Pope_Dwayne_Johnson added.

“I don’t care if they are late for their barmitzfa. Drive like a responsible adult,” /u/DownvoteDaemon suggested.

In California, making a turn from a lane that isn’t designated for that turning movement—like turning right from a straight‑only lane—would be treated as an improper turn under Vehicle Code § 22100, which is an infraction with a typical fine around $238 plus assessments. (shouselaw.com)

A conviction for this improper turn also results in one point on your DMV driving record, which can raise insurance rates and contribute toward a negligent operator suspension if you accumulate too many points. (shouselaw.com)
